Economic Calendar India August 2026: RBI, CPI, GST, GDP & Every Date That Moves the Market

Uncategorized

August is one of the busiest months on India’s economic calendar and one of the most confusing to track, because the events are scattered across at least four different worlds: RBI policy, government statistics, market plumbing, and tax compliance. Most “economic calendar” pages online only cover one of these. This one covers all four, with verified dates, and it gets updated as each event actually happens. If you just want the short version: the RBI’s rate decision came on August 5 (repo held at 5.25%), CPI inflation data lands August 12, the MSCI India review is announced the same day, and the month closes with a double deadline on August 31 both the Q1 FY27 GDP print and the ITR filing due date for freelancers and small businesses. Everything else GST collections, WPI, F&O expiry, IPOs, and market holidays is mapped out below.

What's Happening in India's Economy This August 2026

India’s August 2026 economic calendar is anchored by five events: the RBI Monetary Policy Committee outcome on August 5 (repo rate held at 5.25%), CPI inflation data on August 12, the MSCI India index review on August 12 (effective August 31), Q1 FY27 GDP estimates on August 31, and the ITR filing deadline for freelancers and small businesses (ITR-3/ITR-4, non-audit cases) also on August 31. Add to that GST collections, WPI, an F&O monthly expiry on August 25, and a live IPO pipeline, and it’s a genuinely packed month for investors, taxpayers, and business owners alike.

1. RBI MPC Meeting August 3–5, 2026

rbi mpc

The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee met from August 3 to 5, with Governor Sanjay Malhotra announcing the outcome on August 5 at 10 am. The MPC held the repo rate at 5.25% and retained its neutral stance, keeping the Standing Deposit Facility at 5.0% and the Marginal Standing Facility/Bank Rate at 5.5%. The RBI’s own projection puts FY27 CPI inflation at around 5%.

Why it matters: the repo rate is the benchmark that shapes home loan EMIs, fixed deposit returns, and overall borrowing costs across the banking system. A hold means no immediate change to existing floating-rate loans, but the “neutral stance” language is what markets watch for hints on the next move.

Next MPC meeting: October 5–7, 2026.

Correction note: Several economic-calendar pages currently list the RBI MPC outcome as August 7. The correct, RBI-confirmed date is August 5.

2. CPI Inflation July Data, Released August 12

inflation and gst

MoSPI releases July’s Consumer Price Index reading around the 12th of the following month. The RBI’s medium-term target is 4%, with a tolerance band of ±2%. This is the single most-watched number between MPC meetings because it’s the leading indicator for the RBI’s next rate move.

3. GST Collections August 1

Gross GST collections for July came in at ₹2,11,205 crore, up 15.4% year-on-year the fastest pace of growth in 14 months. Import GST collections surged nearly 29% to ₹66,511 crore, while net GST collections rose 15.8% to ₹1.81 lakh crore. Cumulative Apr–Jul FY27 collections stand at ₹8.43 lakh crore, up 10.1% over the same period last year.

Why it matters: GST collections are a real-time proxy for consumption and formal-economy activity a strong July print is generally read as a healthy demand signal heading into the festive season.

4. MSCI India Index Review Announced August 12, Effective August 31

MSCI announces the results of its Standard Index review after market hours on August 12, with changes taking effect at the close of trading on August 31. Because the announcement lands late at night IST, the Indian market’s reaction typically plays out the next trading session. Estimated passive inflows into India from this rebalancing were revised down to roughly $2.3 billion (from an earlier ~$3.2 billion estimate), based on a projected mix of index inclusions and exclusions.

Why it matters: stocks added to the index typically see buying from passive/index funds tracking MSCI; stocks removed often see the opposite. This is one of the more predictable short-term flow events on the calendar.

5. WPI and Service PPI August 14 and August 24

The Wholesale Price Index and Output PPI for July are released by DPIIT’s Office of Economic Adviser around August 14, with the Service PPI for Q1 FY27 following on August 24. WPI tracks price changes at the wholesale/producer level and is watched alongside CPI to get a fuller picture of pipeline inflation pressure.

6. Q1 FY27 GDP August 31

MoSPI releases the Q1 FY27 (April–June 2026) GDP estimate on August 31, around 4 pm, using the newer 2022-23 base series. This is the last major macro data point of the month and effectively closes the loop on how the economy performed in the first quarter of the new financial year.

Correction note: Some calendars list this release as August 28. The correct MoSPI-scheduled date is August 31.

7. F&O Monthly Expiry and Market Holidays

Since the NSE’s September 2025 rule change, monthly index and stock derivatives now expire on the last Tuesday of the month which falls on August 25 this year. On the holiday front, Independence Day (August 15) falls on a Saturday, so there’s no additional weekday market closure this month; NSE and BSE trade all regular weekdays. Id-E-Milad on August 26 is a settlement holiday (trading continues, but fund/security settlement shifts to the next working day).

8. IPO Calendar August 2026

August has a busy mainboard IPO pipeline, including Leap India, Technocraft Ventures, Molbio Diagnostics, Dhoot Transmission, and Milky Mist, alongside several SME issues. IPO dates shift frequently right up to launchtreat this section as directional and check the exchange listing pages before applying.

9. CKYC 2.0 What's Changing in August

CKYC 2.0 (CKYCRR 2.0) begins its phased rollout in August, starting with banks and insurers, with mutual funds and brokerages following later in the year. The upgrade brings real-time APIs, Aadhaar masking, and OTP-based consent meaning KYC updates and re-verification requests may look different this month if you’re onboarding with a bank, insurer, or (soon) a broker.

What August 2026 Means If You're a Freelancer, Professional, or Small Business Owner

ITR Filing Deadline 2026

Most economic calendars stop at RBI and GDP. But if you’re a freelancer, consultant, or small business owner or you work with a CA three dates in this month matter more directly to you than the MPC outcome does:

  • ITR-3 / ITR-4 filing deadline August 31. This applies to self-employed professionals, freelancers, and small business owners not liable for a tax audit, including those under the presumptive taxation scheme (Sections 44AD/44ADA). Missing it means a late fee of up to ₹5,000 under Section 234F (₹1,000 if your income is below ₹5 lakh), plus possible interest under Section 234A.
  • GST filing rhythm. With July’s collections already in and showing double-digit growth, GST compliance cycles continue on their normal monthly schedule through August a good month to reconcile input tax credit before the next filing window.
  • CKYC 2.0 onboarding changes. If you’re opening a business account, applying for a loan, or updating KYC with a bank or insurer this month, expect the new real-time, Aadhaar-masked process rather than the older paper-heavy one.

If you’re unsure which deadline applies to your filing category, this is exactly the kind of thing worth a five-minute conversation with your CA rather than guessing.
